I planted a a 30′ row of ‘Triple Crown’ variety of blackberry back in spring of 2018. Triple Crown are a thornless variety which is great as blackberry thorns can really tear your hands up during harvesting and pruning. This year, 5 years later, the blackberries have gone bonkers in fruit production.
This is my first season where I will get a ton of blackberries. After all the rain since June, I am grateful to see what will be a bountiful harvest. Look how many berries there are above!
Before blackberries turn black, they are a rosy color. Even after they turn black, you want to see if it will come off easily or still hang on. To get maximum sweetness, you should wait till it comes off easily like these four blackberries.
Here are 4 berries that were ready to be picked. Look how big they were. Sweet, sweet, sweet! Can hardly wait to start really harvesting!

HI Jannine – When did you plant them – i.e. can I plant them now? Or wait until spring. I saw a recommendation to plant bare root plants in spring.
BTW Veg Garden is NOT the same without you
Thank you,
Ellen

Hi Ellen! I think spring is the best time to plant. I had gotten a couple of 1 gal plants from Newmans back then so maybe they will have more next year or buy bare root online in spring. I also dug out a couple of runners from the herb garden and they made it. So that’s another option. But I think spring is a better time to plant them so they can survive winter. They do need more water than other produce but well worth it!
I miss the MG veggie garden and everyone. Hope its doing well this year!

Thanks Jannine – I bought Navajo blackberries from Newman’s and they did not make it. NMSU recommends several other varieties and I will order in the Spring. I have not had any luck starting them from the Veg Garden bush.

RAD! Himalayan blackberry is a wicked weed here, but happens to make somewhat good berries. There are quite a bit of them now. I really should grow some cultivars though.

I’ve grown this variety too, and I love it. I didn’t think you could thornless, robust, and very flavorful in one variety. The canes are super vigorous. You can even create a blackberry tunnel if you grow them over a tall arch.

Wonderful idea to trellis them! I bet they were beautiful!
